Hey, man, you been reading my homework again? We just studied this a couple weeks ago.

The technical name for it is "cognitive busyness" and it does cause quite a bit of loss in mental ability in some (most) people. One study did an experiment where subjects had to remember an 8-digit number while watching a play that they were supposed to critique at the end. Most people either couldn't remember the number or forgot sections of the play. Subjects not having to remember the number could recall the play just fine.

Considering the avalanche of stuff going on at work, it's a wonder you can remember your name, Carl.
